Canada Ski Destinations

Canada ski destinations are some of the most popular in the world. The country is the world’s second largest, featuring varied geography, ranging from expansive prairies to soaring mountain peaks. These peaks are home to top Canada ski resorts both on the east and west coasts.

Planning or Considering a Canada Ski Vacation?

You’ve got lots of choices. Great! You’ve got to make a decision. Hmmmm…. Consider the following four factors when making your decision:

1. Start By Narrowing Down Your List of Provinces

All of Canada’s provinces are worth a visit, but not if you want to go skiing. Focus on the east (Quebec) or west (British Columbia and Alberta).

2. Decide How "BIG" You Want Your Canada Ski Mountain Experience To Be

  • Canada ski resorts out east are fewer in numbers than out west. Mont Tremblant is the most popular and the largest in the area. It features many lifts (10) and trails (95), but the skiable vertical (645 metres) is dwarfed by that of resorts out west.
  • Canada ski resorts out west are nestled amongst the country’s highest mountain ranges. Choose from over 55 resorts of varying sizes. Find the largest, Whistler Blackcomb, near the Pacific coast. Skiers at this resort enjoy over 1600 metres of vertical and 8000 acres of skiable terrain!
  • The second largest ski resort out west is Sun Peaks in the British Columbia interior. Sun Peaks features over 3600 acres of skiable terrain, including its longest trail which runs over 8 kilometres!

3. Consider The Weather & Snow Conditions

Some people think of Canada and envision frozen landscapes dotted with igloos. Of course you know better, but did you realize that average winter temperatures across the country can vary by over twenty degrees in the winter?
  • Canada ski resorts out east are generally colder and icier than their western counterparts. Average January temperatures at Mont Tremblant range from -7.5 to     -19.9 degrees Celcius (18.5 to -3.82 degrees Fahrenheit). Average annual snowfall at Mont Tremblant is 395 cm but they work hard to top it up with over 1000 snowguns in their arsenal.
  • Canada ski resorts out west experience milder winter temperatures and better snowfall. Nearest the coast, Whistler Blackcomb usually sees over 1000 cm of annual snowfall and an average January temperature of -5 degrees Celcius (23 degrees Fahrenheit). It’s important to note that because of the coastal influences, precipitation can often be heavy and wet.
  • Look to the BC interior and Sun Peaks ski resort if you prefer drier, champagne powder. Average January temperatures hover around -6.7 degrees Celcius (19.94 degrees Fahrenheit) and annual snowfall averages 559 cm.

4. Factor In Cost

The cost of your Canada ski vacation primarily includes accommodation and lift tickets. Spend less on these items to stay and ski longer!
  • Canada ski resorts out east are fewer and host a huge number of skiers from nearby urban areas (the top two most populated in the country, Toronto and Montreal). Apply the general rule of supply and demand and accommodations here can get pricier than the western Canada ski resorts. Daily lift tickets for 2010/11 are advertised at $75.
  • Canada ski resorts out west are forced to be competitive with their pricing as skiers have many choices. Whistler Blackcomb comes in on the top of the price scale with daily lift tickets advertised at $93 for the 2010/11 season. Daily lift tickets for Sun Peaks will be $73 in 2010/11. Of course, all resorts occasionally offer specials and discounts when booking accommodation and lift tickets together.
Canada Ski resorts in the west have bigger mountains
If traveling with a family Canada ski vacations can be more reasonable in the west
