Sun Peaks, BC - Sun Peaks welcomed the largest number of summertime guests in its history on Saturday. An estimated 6,000 people were at the resort during the Free Outdoor Concert Event featuring Hollywood legend Kevin Costner and his band Modern West marking a momentous day during their 50th Anniversary celebration year.
“This was a very significant day for the community,” says Christopher Nicholson, President of Tourism Sun Peaks. “And to have it happen during our 50th Anniversary just makes it better. This is great preview of the summer events strategy we have embarked on.”
It was also a significant day for the amount of revenue generated for the community. With hotel occupancy nearing 100 per cent, the event and its strategy are being labeled a success. Important for return business, many guests were first time visitors to the community. Overall, resort activity was comparable to New Years’ Eve, which is traditionally one of the busiest days of the year.
Purposely placed at the beginning of the summer season, the Free Outdoor Concert has increased awareness of Sun Peaks’ summer activities and events as reflected with resort occupancy pacing significantly ahead for all four summer months.
“All shops, restaurants and activities also saw a great boost in revenue from this event and will continue to feel the benefit throughout the summer,” says Nicholson.
A second major concert announcement for the summer was made before the headliner took the stage. B.C. artist Matt Good will perform at the resort on September 1, 2012. Information for the show will be released shortly.
