Avalanche Awareness Day with Helly Hansen

Join Helly Hansen and Sun Peaks Snow Safety teams for Avalanche Awareness Day on Sunday, February 2, 2025. 

Stop by Beacon Basin, located at the top of the Sunburst Express, to learn about safe travel in backcountry terrain, the hazards in the backcountry, how to avoid them, and where to get formal backcountry training and more information.

Part of Avalanche Awareness Days, a country-wide initiative supported by Avalanche Canada, this community event raises awareness of safe backcountry travel and the invaluable role Avalanche Canada plays in providing information for backcountry recreationists.

Due to the hard work and knowledge of our Snow Safety team, the in-bounds terrain at Sun Peaks Resort poses little risk of avalanches, however, this all changes once you enter the backcountry.

AVALANCHE RESCUE CHALLENGES

BURIED BEACONS

Join us for an introductory adventure into the world of avalanche safety, where our Ski Patrol experts will guide you through the ins and outs of beacon usage. You’ll “rescue” buried prizes from Helly Hansen while learning essential techniques for backcountry preparedness.

Time: 30 minute slots between 10:00am and 12:00pm
Location: Beacon Basin

This event is free to attend, but with limited spots and high demand, we kindly ask that you register only if you plan to join us. If your plans change, please cancel your registration to allow someone on the waitlist to take your place.

RULES & REGULATIONS

• You must hold a season pass, or a valid lift ticket for February 2, 2025.
• Couples are encouraged to sign up as a single attendee.

SNOW SEARCH & RESCUE

Join us for an exciting demonstration of avalanche rescue techniques, where our Patrol experts will walk you through the critical steps of probing for someone who is buried, and then digging out the buried party member. Teams will compete to locate the target, with the winning team earning prizes. This hands-on experience will teach you vital skills for avalanche safety and teamwork in the backcountry!

Time: 30 minute slots between 1:00pm and 3:00pm
