Sun Peaks Resort's favourite Olympian is no stranger to accolades, Hall of Fames, or 'best ever' lists. Since her famous victory at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, France and record success on the World Cup circuit, the name Nancy Greene Raine is familiar to every Canadian winter sports fan.
This time, however, it's decades of work outside of her sporting achievements that is earning Nancy her latest honour: an induction into the Canadian Tourism Hall of Fame.
On Tuesday, November 27, the Tourism Industry Association of Canada welcomed Nancy Greene Raine as the newest inductee into the Hall of Fame during the 2018 Tourism Congress in Gatineau, Quebec.
An active promoter of winter sports following her retirement from ski racing, Nancy has always believed it is vital to highlight the incredible skiing and snow sports on offer in Canada in order to bolster winter tourism to the country. The Hall of Fame induction is a fitting acknowledgement of her tireless work to promote Canada as one of the world's premier ski destinations.
From 1975 to 1994, Nancy and her husband Al resided in Whistler and played a fundamental role in putting the resort on the map as an international ski destination. The couple were in involved in destination promotion, the expansion of Whistler and Blackcomb mountains, and the construction of Whistler’s first hotel, Nancy Greene’s Olympic Lodge (now known as Crystal Lodge).
In 1994, the couple left Whistler for Sun Peaks, where development of a new ski resort at the former Tod Mountain ski area was underway. Over the past two decades they have been an integral part of Sun Peaks Resort's growth into an internationally renowned destination and sustainable year-round community, with highlights including the construction of the first condominium hotel in Sun Peaks (Nancy Greene’s Cahilty Lodge), Al being elected as the inaugural Mayor of Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality, and Nancy serving as Sun Peaks Resort's Director of Skiing, which she proudly does to this day.
Through her role with the resort, Nancy Greene Raine continues to spread the word about both Sun Peaks' and Canada's winter charms to people throughout the world. One of her most cherished interactions with the public is through her complimentary Ski with Nancy Greene tours, available to all Sun Peaks Resort guests on a regular basis. Even after all these years she's still keen to show off her home mountain and even provide a ski tip or two!
