February 15, 2018 is a special day, marking 50 years since Sun Peaks Resort Director of Skiing, Nancy Greene, thrilled the country with her gold medal win in the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, France.
On that day, Canada’s Female Athlete of the 20th Century torched the rest of the field in the women’s giant slalom, claiming victory by one of the biggest margins in Olympic history and cementing her place as a Canadian sporting legend. The gold medal was the pinnacle of a fulfilling career, adding to the silver she won two days earlier in the slalom event and her 13 career World Cup victories.
With the PyeongChang 2018 games kicking off this week and Olympic fever sweeping through our winter sports-obsessed village—not to mention Sun Peaks being the host mountain venue of the BC Winter Games later this month—it’s the perfect time to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Nancy’s gold medal winning run.
Sun Peaks Resort has a big day of celebrations planned on Thursday, February 15th and everyone is invited to join us in celebrating Nancy’s milestone. Activities get underway at 11:30am with an opportunity to ski a run with the Olympic Champion from the top of the Sunburst chairlift. Following, a flag parade and presentation ceremony will take place at the base of the Village Platter at 12:00pm.
Later in the day, in true ski town fashion, the celebrations will ramp up into the evening with a public reception and Olympic celebration at Masa’s Bar + Grill from 7:00pm – 9:00pm. The reception will include Olympic Games coverage, live music, complimentary appetizers, and the opportunity to snap a photo with Canada’s golden girl and her medals.
For more information about the festivities, check out the details on our events calendar.
See you there!
