The snow is a little colder, the trees are a little bigger, and untouched lines last a little longer on the other side of the valley.
A favourite of families and lovers of fresh cord, the north facing slopes of Mt. Morrisey harbour snowy cedars and some of the best intermediate groomers in the Resort. Don't be misled by Morrisey’s mellow nature though, there is steeper terrain lurking over on the “dark side” of Sun Peaks if you know where to look.
Step through the covered bridge or take a ride on the Morrisey Express during your next visit to discover the charms of this sometimes-overlooked area of the resort.
History
Mt. Morrisey was the most recent of Sun Peaks’ three mountains to be opened for skiing and snowboarding. In January 2003 the Morrisey Express quad chairlift opened to the public for the very first time, along with 17 brand new runs to enjoy.
The Orient chairlift joined the party in 2018, connecting the base of the Morrisey Express and the expanding developments of the East Village to the main Resort core.
Favourite Runs on Morrisey For
Families
The Sticks is a family favourite run for many here in Sun Peaks. This wide, gentle run winds its way down from the top of the chairlift on the far skier’s right of Morrisey.
It’s the perfect run to get a taste of a feature unique to our third mountain: numerous tree islands dotted throughout the run; an experience sometimes described as skiing ‘groomed glades.’ Weaving through the trees on Sticks is a great way to get your first taste of tree skiing without having to leave the piste.
Powder Hounds
The Groomed with Fresh symbol is a special thing to spot on the grooming board at the top of your first run for the day. This indicates that five centimetres or more of fresh snow has fallen since the run was groomed earlier the evening before, which some argue provides the ultimate skiing surface.
Morrisey’s groomers are the perfect place to enjoy one of these rare mornings. When the stars align, floating top-to-bottom down Mid-Life Crisis on a groomed with fresh day is sure to put a grin on your face.
Cruising Cord
I’Dunno is a Morrisey classic and another great run to experience the ‘groomed glades’ style of skiing unique to this part of the resort. It’s also the easy answer for when your group isn’t sure what to ski next!
If you’re looking to strut your stuff in front of an audience then the aptly named Showboat provides a stage directly under the Morrisey Express lift line. Carve through fresh cord and skim over rollers as you rip GS turns between the lift towers.
Charging Steeps
Think Morrisey isn’t steep? Think again! Tucked into the shady, skier’s left side of the mountain is the infamous Laundromat zone, which contains some of the steepest runs in the Resort.
If the themed names like Static Cling, In Tatters, and Lint Trap aren’t enough to let you know you’ve found the zone, then the steep fall line dropping away under the tips of your skis should clue you in.
Pre-Ski Fuel Up
Swing by 5Forty Café & Cantina on your way to Morrisey for a hearty breakfast to start your day. Located at the top of the village, 5Forty is a longtime local hangout and they start slinging their Mexican themed menu at 8:00am every morning.
Après Scene
You can’t après any closer to Morrisey than the Umbrella Café, located at the base of the Orient and Morrisey chairlifts. Stop by on the weekends to grab a drink and work on your goggle tan in the afternoon sun.
For a Morrisey themed option in the village, the mountain’s namesake is an obvious choice. Stop in at Morrisey’s Public House to indulge in a beverage and some people watching on their heated patio (complete with fire pits), catch a live game, or stick around for the evening to enjoy live music.
