Sun Peaks often lives up to its reputation for plenty of blue skies and high fives on the slopes through the spring. As March gives way to April, temperatures warm, snow-bearing clouds part, and events and festivities return to full swing with the milder mountain weather.
Whether you have a spring skiing tradition of your own or want to start a new one with your friends and family this year, here are five reasons why Sun Peaks makes a perfect destination for your last turns of the winter season and local tips to make the most of your trip:
Catch Ontario-based rockers The Trews for a free outdoor concert on Saturday, March 4th, while the band is on tour with their seventh studio album Wanderer. Events keep rolling right through March and up until the chairlifts close for the winter season on April 10th, and milder spring weather brings locals and resort guests back outdoors to celebrate the changing seasons. Check out these event highlights and visit the full events calendar to make sure you don’t miss anything during your spring Sun Peaks visit.
Tip: Spring events on and off the mountain are great opportunities to sport your parent’s fluorescent one-piece ski suit or some good old jeans tucked into your snowboard boots. Silly outfits abound in ski resorts as the daily need for GoreTex declines, and your thrift-shop finds will be in good company.
The Trews headline a FREE outdoor concert on March 4th as part of a two-day celebration in Sun Peaks.
Local artists, artisans and storytellers come together to showcase the rich culture of the North Thompson in this 7 Celebrations - Reconnecting in the Thompson Okanagan event, presented in partnership with the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association and funded by the Canadian Heritage Grant.

The day's best skiing arguably shifts from early mornings earlier in the season, to early afternoons in the spring when the sunshine softens up the slopes. Morrisey and Sundance mountain lifts stay open until 4pm after February 1st, so it’s okay to sleep in and ski the afternoon away. Keep in mind powder days regularly happen right through spring and beyond closing day though, so it never hurts to have your mountain go-bag packed the night before.
Tip: Consider when and where the sun hits different aspects of the mountains when choosing your spring runs. The soft snow often hardens up overnight and needs morning sunshine or warmer temps to soften up. Hint - run names can give you a good place to start, and “Sundance” and “Sunrise” both catch early-morning rays.
Spring is the best time of year for après-ski patio celebrations, as spring temperatures seep through the village core and the sun soaks patios on the mountain—and secluded picnic spots, too! If the après scene isn’t for you, try packing your bag lunch up the lift with you to your favourite lookout or hike (please pack out what you pack in).
Tip: Remember sun protection for your exposed skin and your eyes when skiing in the spring or basking on the patio afterwards. Sun reflects off the snow and can hit spots you don’t think of getting burned in the summer. Wear sunscreen and reapply through the day, and wear appropriate sunglasses/goggles to protect your eyes. Nothing kills a good après-vibe like sun-burnt nostrils!
The month of March offers plenty of both powder and sunshine in the mountains of interior British Columbia, and April is famous for long days with soft, forgiving spring snow conditions forming later in the day.
Tip: Check the daily snow report and weather forecast before heading out on the mountain, and consider wearing a backpack to pack away extra layers as the day warms up. Warm-weather wax can also be a good option to keep your boards sliding as the snow warms up.
From family ski days to family-friendly activities savouring the final moments of winter in the mountains, warmer spring temperatures and longer days mean more hours of sunshine to spend outdoors with your crew.
Tip: Sun Peaks has tons of winter activities for the whole family to enjoy, both inside and outside, on and off skis. Check out all the activities available and try something new this spring!
